Finding an Accountant
All businesses need an accountant; they are an important part of running a business. They do far more than just keep the books; in truth most accountants don't actually keep the books any more. An accountant will play an important role in the strategic direction of your business. Therefore it is important to make sure that you hire a good one. Or at least one you are comfortable with.
The best way to find an accountant is to ask people that you know for a referral. You almost certainly know people who run their own business, ask them about their accountant. If you can find somebody who is recommended to you buy your colleagues you will probably have an easier time in making your selection. If you don't know somebody who can recommend one to you it will be necessary to pull out the Yellow Pages and look for somebody in there. You are going to want to get a few names since you will need to do some further research to make sure they are the right accountant for you.
The first thing that you are going to want to do is to find out what kind of firm they are. If you have specialized accounting needs you will need to make sure that they can meet these. The larger firms will have specialists in all areas of accounting, that could come in handy if you have a complicated business. On the other hand a small firm in which you deal with the same accountant for all of your needs can help to give you some continuity.
You are also going to want to make sure that the accountant that you hire has experience in your type of business. If you are a small start up company you are not going to want to work with a firm that deals primarily in Fortune 500 companies. The same is true when it comes to the industry you work in; if you are a high tech firm you will want an accountant with experience with high tech firms. You should be able to get a list of clients from each firm you are considering. Take a look at it and make sure that there are companies that are similar to yours on that list.
The last step in finding an accountant is going to be to sit down with them and talk about your companies needs. They will be able to tell you if they are able to help you. It is also important that you make sure that you are comfortable with this person; they will play a large role in your business. If the fit just doesn't seem right or if you find that you aren't comfortable with them try a different firm. The last thing that you are going to want to do is rush into an arrangement with the wrong accountant.
